The company was initially founded in 1919 as the Aardapplemeel Verkoop Bureau' (Potato starch Sales), and was responsible for selling starch produce for local farming cooperatives. Avebe is Europe's largest potato starch producer.

Avebe makes their products out of potato's. They grow, extract, process, and sell potato related ingredients and products such as raw potato starch, protein, and fiber. Avebe's potato based products are sold for use in a variety of industries such as animal feed, food, paper, adhesives, textiles, and construction.
