42Lab developed a modular and affordable experiment kit that is the size of a notebook. It was designed to enhance Science Technology and Math (STEM) hands-on education. CEO Yasaman Nematbakhsh has a PhD in biomedical engineering at National University of Singapore (NUS), studying circulating tumor cells. Dr. Data Ng has a PhD in physics from University of Hong Kong, experience in hardware design and manages a secondary school.
The 42Lab product allows hardware to be combined in a modular fashion, like building with Legos. The modular portable biotech laboratory may consist of a combination of instruments such as a centrifuge, PCR machine, power supply for gel electrophoresis and incubator. An intuitive software introduces biotechnology to students with minimal teacher oversight. Students can conduct experiments and use the companion app which serves as an electronic manual as well as a management tool for teachers. The software also helps teachers manage the class. Schools are charged a yearly subscription per student.
