He made his first space flight on October 12–13, 1964 aboard the Voskhod-1 spacecraft, together with cosmonauts K. P. Feoktistov and B. B. Egorov (the call sign of the crew was Rubin). It was the world's first multi-seat spacecraft. For the first time, the crew included not only a pilot, but also an engineer and a doctor. For the first time in history, the crew flew without catapults and spacesuits (due to tight

ness in the cockpit). For the first time, a soft landing system was used.

The total duration of the flight was 24 hours 17 minutes 3 seconds, during which time the ship made 16 orbits around the Earth. For the successful completion of the flight, the crew was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal. On October 15, 1965, he was awarded the qualification "cosmonaut of the 3rd class", and on January 23, 1965 - "instructor-cosmonaut".

On April 24, 1967, Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov is killed when his parachute fails to deploy during his spacecraft’s landing.

Komarov was testing the spacecraft Soyuz I in the midst of the space race between the United States and the Soviet Union. Earlier in 1967, the U.S. space program had experienced its own tragedy. Gus Grissom, Edward White and Roger Chafee, NASA astronauts in the Apollo program, were killed in a fire during tests on the ground.
