Overview

Osmo is the developer of an artificial intelligence platform designed to equip computers with the ability to perceive and generate smell. The company utilizes a machine learning concept to create aroma molecules for perfumes, shampoos, lotions, candles, and other everyday products. In addition, it aims to develop disease detection and pandemic tracking capabilities.

For its solutions, Osmo utilizes expertise in machine learning, sensory neuroscience, data science, engineering, fine fragrance, analytical chemistry, and product development.

History

Prior to the company's founding, the original Osmo team was led by Alex Wiltschko at Google Research, where they used machine learning to build the foundations of the company's map of smell. The research involved:

  • using Graph Neural Networks to predict the smell of a molecule by analyzing its structure,
  • creating new molecules that have not been smelled before and accurately predicting them,
  • and developing molecules that smell bad to mosquitoes for use in olfactory insect repellents, which are more potent than DEET in human trials.
