The Higher School of Economics was founded on November 27, 1992, by resolution of the Russian government.

By the decree of the Government of the Russian Federation dated August 12, 2008. The Higher School of Economics was placed under the jurisdiction of tr the jurisdiction of the Government of the Russian Federation. Until August 12, 2008 the Higher School of Economics was under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of the Russian Federation.

The Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 56 of 01.02.2016 changed the Charter and the official name of the Higher School of Economics (the word "professional" was excluded from the name). The full name sounds as follows: Federal State Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Education National Research University Higher School of Economics.

By the decree of the Government of the Russian Federation of December 23, 2010 ¹ 1109 "About creation of Federal State Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Professional Education "National Research University "Higher School of Economics"" the University has received a new name and the status of the autonomous educational institution. Until December 23, 2010 the official name of the University was SU-HSE.

On December 30, 2011 by the decree of the Government of the Russian Federation the Higher School of Economics merged with the Moscow State Institute of Electronics and Mathematics (MIEM) and two institutions of additional professional education - Executive Training Centre and State Academy of Investment Specialists (GASIS).
