Narwhal Technologies Inc (Nrwl) is a software company that created the Nx and Nx Cloud products. The company also maintains the open-source project Lerna, among other widely used open-source projects. The company has increasingly marketed itself under the name Nx and Nx Cloud rather than Narwhal Technologies or Nrwl.
Nx is an open-source build system with tooling and continuous integration (CI) capabilities that helps developer teams maintain and scale monorepo. Nx Cloud is a fully managed end-to-end solution for CI, built for monorepos. Lerna is an open-source tool for managing JavaScript projects with multiple packages.
The company was founded in December 2016 by Victor Savkin (CTO) and Jeff Cross (CEO), who previously worked in the Angular team at Google. They started Narwhal after seeing a gap between how enterprises were building software and how companies like Google were building software. Narwhal started as an Angular consulting shop helping large banks, airlines, and other enterprises. The company released the first version of its developer toolkit, Nx, in 2017, focusing on enabling monorepo-style development for large software teams.
On May 6, 2022, Narwhal took over stewardship of Lerna. After bootstrapping the company and choosing not to raise funding, a decision intended to give the founders space to experiment with different business models, Narwhal announced $8.6 million in seed funding on November 17, 2022. The round was co-led by Nexus Venture Partners and Andreesen Horowitz with participation from a number of angel investors, including GitHub co-founder Tom Preston-Werner. On September 25, 2023, Nx closed a $ 15 million Series A round from Nexus Venture Partners and a16z.
