Magneto-Inertial Fusion Technologies, Inc. is a company developing a method of controlled thermonuclear fusion, based on Staged Z-Pinch, a pulse-power-driven, plasma-compression system. Instability problems with staged Z-Pinch have hindered the progress towards fusion power production. Scientists at MIFTI believe they have solved these issues using software supplied by the U.S. Air Force.
The Z-Pinch is an approach for simultaneously heating, confining, and compressing plasma by applying an intense, pulsed electrical current which generates a magnetic field.
A by-product of MIFTI's fusion technology is the ability to generate radioisotopes for use in nuclear medicine.
MIFTI was founded in 2008 by scientists from the University of California Irvine and is based in Tustin California. In 2015 the company was awarded $4,598,239 from ARPA-E their staged Z-Pinch fusion concept.
