The theater was created by the Decree of the People's Commissariat of Education of the Ukrainian SSR as a state theater, the task of which was "propaganda of realistic art, the approval of the method of stage truth and deep psychologism." The theater was headed by Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR Nikolai Vasilievich Petrov (since 1945 - People's Artist of the RSFSR), before that - the director of the Leningrad Academic Drama Theater (Alexandrinsky Theater). In addition to H. Petrov, Honored Artist of the RSFSR Alexander Grigoryevich Kramov (since 1944 - People's Artist of the USSR), who came to Kharkov from the Moscow Theater of the Moscow State Socialist Party, and Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR Nikolai Nikolaevich Sinelnikov (since 1934 - People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR) were invited as directors ), a well-known entrepreneur and director in Kharkov.
For Kharkiv residents and guests of the city Kharkov Academic Russian Drama Theater. A. S. Pushkin was and remains one of the favorite places of cultural leisure. The theater opened on November 17, 1933 with N. Gogol's immortal comedy The Inspector General.
In 1937, Alexander Grigoryevich Kramov became the artistic director of the theater. Already in 1944, his merits were noticed and he received the title of People's Artist of the USSR. A. Kramov created many excellent acting works on the stages of various theaters of the country, including the Kharkov Russian Drama, but it was here that the directing finally captured him. After productions of "Intervention" by L. Slavin and "Aristocrats" by N. Pogodin, A. Kramov was recognized as an accomplished director. And the performances based on the works of L. Tolstoy "Anna Karenina" and "Resurrection" became real masterpieces of theatrical art of that time.
"PORTAL TO GOGOL 8"
On March 5, 2017, the long-awaited small stage of the Portal on Gogol 8 theater was opened with the play "The Seagull" by A. Chekhov. Being an integral part of the theater. A. S. Pushkin, “Portal on Gogol 8” is an absolutely independent platform that functions according to its own rules. The small stage is open to bold, sometimes controversial, sometimes scandalous productions. Here, young people who have just come to the theater gain creative experience, and here actors of the older generation can try themselves in a new, non-standard role. Thus, collaborating on the experimental site, they exchange experiences and learn to think creatively, which makes it possible to expand their creative range, test their skills in new, previously uncharted territory. The performances of "Portal on Gogol 8" cause different, often ambiguous impressions, giving critics food for discussion. But at the same time they never leave the audience indifferent. This means that one of the most difficult tasks of the theater - to evoke emotions - is skillfully handled by the experimental stage, attracting more and more interest from the Kharkiv public.
