Smyth received his education at the University of Cambridge, where he was mentored by Ernest Rutherford, a prominent physicist. Edward Mills Purcell, who became a successful physicist himself, was one of Smyth's doctoral students. Smyth passed away in Princeton, New Jersey on September 11, 1986.
