HB11 Energy is a company developing an alternative approach to nuclear fusion using the hydrogen-boron 11 reaction rather than standard approaches based on fusing the hydrogen isotopes deuterium and tritium. Their technology uses high power lasers combined with magnetic confinement to produce fusion without the need for heating the fuel to extreme temperatures.
Based in Freshwater, New South Wales, a suburb of northern Sydney HB11 Energy was founded in 2017 by Warren McKenzie and Heinrich Hora, Professor Emeritus of the University of New South Wales (UNSW). The companies technology is based on Prof. Hora's work. He conceived of the idea to achieve hydrogen-boron 11 fusion reactions through lasers without high temperatures in the 1960s. A hydrogen-boron 11 fusion reactor was described by Prof. Hora in his 2017 paper "Road map to clean energy using laser beam ignition of boron-hydrogen fusion ".
