In 2013, Guardian Bikes founders Brian Riley and Kyle Jansen created the patented SureStop braking system, after the founder’s grandfather broke several vertebrae in a bicycle accident. The SureStop braking system uses one lever, instead of two, and works by first applying braking to the rear wheel, and then dynamically applying it to the front wheels to reduce braking-related accidents. The SureStop braking system has been compared to anti-lock brakes in cars.
After partnering with existing brands to make SureStop standard equipment on adult bicycles, the founders' attention shifted to children's bike safety. Guardian Bikes was founded in Irvine, California in 2015 to manufacture safe bicycles for children ages six through twelve using their patented SureStop braking system. In 2017, the founders of Guardian Bikes appeared on Shark Tank and completed an investment deal with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.
