Overview

DeepMind is an artificial intelligence company creating programs that use deep neural networks to teach themselves how to play a variety of games like Go and chess. The company was founded on September 23, 2010, by Demis Hassabis, Shane Legg, and Mustafa Suleyman and was acquired by Google in 2014.

Company development

In March of 2023, Google announced the company was consolidating its various AI and neural network divisions into a single entity. This meant Google Brain, from Google Research, was joining with DeepMind to form Google DeepMind. The new entity was developed to accelerate Google's AI efforts by joining the teams under a single umbrella. Further, the move was to bring DeepMind closer to Google and to increase collaboration between the development of AI in the company and its integration with Google's various product areas.

Prior DeepMind CEO, Demis Hassabis, was named the CEO of Google DeepMind, and Jeff Dean took on an elevated role of chief scientist, reporting to Sundar Pichai and working alongside Demis Hassabis to set a future direction of AI research. The development of Google DeepMind included the establishment of a new scientific board to oversee research progress.

Previous successes of the DeepMind and Google Brain teams have included AlphaGo, Transformers, word2vec, WaveNet, AlphaFold, sequence-to-sequence models, distillation, deep reinforcement learning, and distributed systems and frameworks such as TensorFlow and JAX for large-scale machine learning models. The development of Google DeepMind was in part to continue Google's push towards developing a rival for ChatGPT and Bing Chat and to continue to develop its Google Bard AI system.
