God of War is a series of computer games in the action genres hack and slash and action-adventure. Based on ancient Greek and Scandinavian mythology. The main character of all the games in the series is the Spartan warrior Kratos, who defied the gods. The main games of the series are being developed by Santa Monica Studio, which is the California department of Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The debut of the God of War series took place in March 2005, when the first game of the series, God of War, developed by SCE Santa Monica, was released for the PlayStation 2 console. According to IGN, the game was on the first line of the best games on PS2. A sequel, God of War II was also developed by SCE Santa Monica and released in March 2007, also for PlayStation 2. In June of the same year, a game was released for mobile devices on the Java platform — God of War: Betrayal, which was developed by Javaground.

In March 2008, a prequel to the first game of the series — God of War: Chains of Olympus, which was developed by Ready at Dawn Studios, was released exclusively for the PlayStation Portable.

God of War III was released for PlayStation 3 on March 16, 2010 in the USA and on March 17 in Russia. The Soft Club company acted as the localizer and distributor.

On November 2, 2010, God of War: Ghost of Sparta was released, chronologically it is located between God of War and God of War II. On September 16, 2011, the God of War Collection Volume II was released, including remakes of God of War: Chains of Olympus and God of War: Ghost of Sparta for PlayStation 3 consoles[1]. In April 2012, God of War: Ascension was announced for PlayStation 3, the game was released on March 12, 2013.

Illustrations leaked online in April 2016 from an artist who worked on the unannounced next part of God of War indicate that the game will be based on Scandinavian mythology[2]. During the E3 2016 exhibition, the eighth game in the series, God of War, was presented. The game was released on April 20, 2018. In December 2018, at The Game Awards 2018, she received the title of Game of the year[3]. In March 2019, at the Game Developers Choice Awards 2019, the game was recognized as the best and received the "Game of the Year" award[4].
