London-based Future Science Group (FSG) is a scientific publisher, providing cutting-edge scientific journals, digital/virtual hubs, events, creative services, and publishing services. At its core, FSG believes in providing products and services that connect scientific communities and support collaboration, innovation, and translation. As the pioneer in publishing plain language summaries, Future Science Group helps provide more access to critical information.
Its 34 journals, 15 of which are open access, are located on two websites – Future Medicine, which focuses on the biosciences, and clinical and translational medicine, and Future Science, which focuses on applied science and intellectual property in R&D. Titles include Bioanalysis, BioTechniques, Future Oncology, Nanomedicine, and Regenerative Medicine.
Collectively, FSG journals house more than 50,000 published articles and generate more than 4 million annual downloads. The journals are overseen by about 1,000 editorial board members from science and medicine. The journals remain at the core of the FSG identity, connecting clinicians, researchers, and patients with objective, current information regarding trends and current issues. In addition to the journals, FSG publishes more than 200 eBooks covering multiple medical and scientific disciplines.
Future Science Group provides contributors with tools that help them share and display information in ways that enhance understanding, especially among non-specialists. These tools allow for complementary materials such as graphical abstracts, infographics, and videos. Journal authors have the option to provide a lay abstract to give readers an overview without overly technical jargon. FSG was the first publisher to include these plain language summaries as standalone articles.
Future Science Group journals now include citable and standalone plain language summaries in all its journals. These pieces are designed for non-specialist readers to provide more accessible information. While traditional scientific journals publish jargon-heavy research, data analysis, and technical information, plain language summaries provide concise and clear recaps of scientific publications. Researchers and clinicians write summaries that all readers can understand, without the technical language that can be difficult for non-specialists to understand. Plain language summaries offer complex scientific and medical information for a lay audience to understand, making research more accessible and digestible.
Future Science Group's plain language summaries are free to download, allowing readers to easily distribute the material after providing credit to the original publication. FSG provides plain language summaries so that as many people as possible can further their knowledge of medical and scientific research.
FSG’s other services and solutions offer contributors and readers additional options for publishing and accessing content. They include:
- Eight digital hubs and a video journal that provide a comprehensive resource for staying current through news, opinions, videos, and panel discussions. Areas include 3D printing in medicine, bioanalysis, biomedicine, lab methods/protocols, oncology, real-world evidence, nanomedicine, neurology, neuroscience, and regenerative medicine. The hubs and journal have more than 100,000 registered members and more than 400,000 monthly page views
- Future Science Events that provide the scientific community with opportunities to engage and connect in outcome-led discussions. The first event, 3DMedLIVE, in October 2019 featured surgical applications of 3D printing and drew surgeons, manufacturers, technicians, and regulators together. Real World Evidence – Rare Diseases and Innovative Therapies is scheduled for June 2022
With plain language summaries, accessible content, and innovation platforms and events, FSG connects the scientific and medical communities.
