Friedrich was born in West Lafayette, Indiana, on August 7, 1969. He graduated from Norman High School in Norman, Oklahoma in 1987. In 1996, Friedrich graduated from Phi Beta Kappa at Grinnell College with a bachelor's degree in English, Economics and Religion. He holds degrees from Johns Hopkins University and the London School of Economics, as well as a doctorate in Law from Georgetown University Law Center, having received a diploma with honors, the Order of the Cap

previously worked at PETA and Farm Sanctuary.

He held the position of Director of Policy at Farm Sanctuary for four years.

Before that , he worked for PETA for 15 years . As a public campaign manager, he has led many of the organization's most high-profile campaigns.

In 2015, Friedrich was hired by Mercy For Animals as a co-founder of the Good Food Institute (GFI) in 2015 with the goal of transforming the food system by promoting price- and taste-competitive alternatives to animal products.

Friedrich is the co-founder of New Crop Capital; a venture capital firm to finance the development of alternative proteins.

An effective advocate of altruism, Friedrich is a member of Giving What We Can, a community of people who have committed to donating part of their income to effective charities.

Friedrich has been a Christian and vegan since 1987.

He is married to Alka Chandni, who works at PETA.
