Bloomberg Businessweek, formerly Businessweek, is a weekly magazine focused on business news. Bloomberg Businessweek is published fifty times per year in both print and digital formats, as well as website content and through its Bloomberg Businessweek+ app. The magazine covers companies, finance, markets, politics, and technology, geared toward a global audience. The publication is owned by Bloomberg LP and is headquartered in New York and is available in over 150 countries. In 2021, Bloomberg Businessweek had a circulation of 990,000.

History

Businessweek was established in 1929. Its first edition was published weeks before the stock market crash in October 1929. In its original iteration, the magazine included sections “Labor,” “Management,” “New Products,” and “Business Abroad.” It expanded its economics content in the 1940s, dropped an "Agriculture" section, and added a "Personal Business" column in the 1950s. From the 1930s through 1961, the magazine focused strongly on the American economy, with each edition featuring a thermometer gauging the temperature of the country's economy. In 1969, it became the first magazine to devote a section to information technology, calling it "Information Processing." In the 1970s, the magazine began adding bylines to its articles and altered its subscription strategy in an attempt to solicit readers outside of the business world. In the 1980s and 1990s, Businessweek added an international edition, expanding its reach across the globe and tapping its foreign bureaus. In the early 2000s, the magazine suffered a decline in circulation and advertising revenues. Businessweek was acquired by Bloomberg LP from McGraw Hill in 2009 for an undisclosed amount, estimated between $2 million and $5 million is cash plus assumed liabilities.

Publication

Bloomberg Businessweek reports on a wide variety of topics in its Markets, Technology, Politics, Wealth, Pursuits, New Economy, Equality, Green, and CityLab sections. Additionally, Bloomberg Businessweek features opinion columns and produces supplemental content on its website and mobile application, including podcasts. Since 1988, the magazine has published annual rankings of United States business school MBA programs. In 2006, it began publishing annual rankings of undergraduate business programs in addition to its MBA program listing. Bloomberg Businessweek also publishes annual lists of "50 Companies to Watch" and the "Bloomberg 50," individuals in business, entertainment, finance, politics, technology, and science who have influenced the previous year.
