Bake In Space is a company that has the objective of making fresh bread onboard the International Space Station. The company was founded in Bremen, Bremen, Germany, in 2017.
The company was created to improve the well-being of the astronauts lives during long-term missions on the International Space Station, on a future Moon base, or on a mission to Mars. Their belief is that fresh food evokes positivity and happiness through all the senses, especially smell, touch, and taste. The objective they created has been split into five phases in order to advance their goal of food sustainability in space.
The first phase of Bake In Space's objective is Bake, which includes demonstrating the baking of various crumb-free food items and bread samples through a space-ready oven. Phase two is Knead, which is demonstrating the kneading of flour with water to create raw dough in micro-gravity. Phase three is Grind, and is demonstrating the grinding of grain to flour in micro-gravity. Phase four is Harvest, and is the harvesting and separation of plant and grain in micro-gravity. Phase five is Grow, which entails the growth of grain to create a regular supply of grain for three bread rolls.
