He was born on February 4, 1901 in St. Petersburg in the family of a Baltic German Adolf Werth and his wife Camille C. Schmidt, an Englishwoman who died early.

My father was a fairly large industrialist and, according to Alexander Vert himself, "a constructive bourgeois." A few weeks before the October Revolution, he took his son to Scotland, to Glasgow.
