Miniature Atomic vapor-Cells Quantum devices for SensIng and Metrology AppLications (macQsimal) is a research project developing minaturized quantum-enabled sensors in five areas: magnetic fields, time, rotation, electro-magnetic radiation and gas concentration.
macQsimal aims to develop atomic vapor cells as integrated microelectromechanical systems (MEMs) fabricated at the wafer level. The sensors will concurrently apply advanced squeezing, entanglement and cavity-quantum electrodynamics (QED) methods .
The specific minaturized sensors macQsimal is developing are quantum-enabled atomic clocks, gyroscopes, magnetometers.These will form prototypes for applications in autonomous navigation, non-invasive medical diagnosis and drug detection.
In October 2018 the macQsimal project was chosen as one of the Quantum Flagship's initial 20 projects receiving €10,209,943.75 in funding from the European Comission. A 3-year project macQsimal will run for the duration of the Quantum Flagship's ramp-up phase (October 2018 - September 2021).
macQsimal is coordinated by the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM), a research and technology organization (RTO) based in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. The project consortium is made up of research groups and companies working in the field of atomic sensing. A full list of collaborators is below:
