Yakov Borisovich Zel'dovich was a physicist and chemist born on March 8, 1914, in Minsk . He held citizenship in both the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union . Zel'dovich was educated at Saint Petersburg State University and had Lev Landau as his doctoral advisor .
