Tom Scott is a professor at the University of Bristol and co-founder of Arkenlight, a developer of low-power radiovoltaic batteries and telemetry solutions. Scott has served as Arkenlight's Chief Technology Officer since January 2021.
After graduating from the Thomas Hardye School in Dorchester, England, Scott began attending the University of Bristol in 1996. He received his Master of Science in Geology in 2000. Scott continued studying at the University of Bristol from 2002 to 2005, earning his PhD in Uranium Geochemistry and receiving a commendation for excellence. Scott currently serves as the school's Professor of Materials within the School of Physics, a position he has held since 2016. He also serves as director of the Interface Analysis Center.
Arkenlight was born out of the ASPIRE diamond group at the University of Bristol. Scott served as the program's principal investigator and founded Arkenlight in 2020, along with co-investigator Dr. Neil Fox.Arkenlight uses Scott and Fox's radiovoltaic technology to create diamond batteries recycled from nuclear waste. The hope is that these batteries will be able to last for thousands of years while repurposing the harmful radioactive waste.
Arkenlight was incorporated in London as a private limited company in August 2020.
In addition to his work at Arkenlight, Professor Scott also serves as the Executive and Technical Director of ImiTec and the Executive Co-Director of the Bristol-Oxford Nuclear Research Centre.
