The Economist is a publication offering coverage of world politics, economics, business, science, culture and more through their weekly newspaper and daily articles online. The publication claims to have a "classically liberal" agenda and does not to align with a particular political party. The Economist's mission remains the same today as it was it its founding: "A severe contest between intelligence, which presses forward, and an unworthy, timid ignorance obstructing our progress" - founder James Wilson, 1943.
The Economist Newspaper, Ltd is the parent company of The Economist Group. The Economist Group publishes multiple other magazines and newspapers including European Voice, Business Central Europe (BCE), and Intelligent Life. They also publish The World In…, Espresso, Economist Films, Economist Radio and 1843. The Economist Group offers analysis on international business and world affairs through their publications, as well as conferences and electronic services.
The Economist was founded in 1843 by Scotsman James Wilson and mainly covered regulation of grain trade in a response to England's Corn Laws. From 1861-1877, Walter Bagehot served as editor of The Economist, expanding the publication’s coverage into politics.
By 1938, under the editorial guidance of Sir Walter Layton, The Economist had begun establishing itself as an authority, and half of the publications sales were overseas. Due to their coverage of Pearl Harbor and increased focus on American news, The Economist continued to gain readership in America. The Economist Intelligence Unit was founded in 1946 to serve the newspaper and provide business intelligence to outside companies. In 1959, The Economist's red label was debuted.
In 2001 The Economist began releasing full-color editorial layouts. In 2005, The Economist averaged 1,009,759 per week in the ABC (Audit Bureau of Circulations) July-December period. The Economist released an online audio version in 2007 and a mobile app in 2010.
