Energy to Power Solutions (e2P) has teamed with the Florida State University’s Center for Advanced Power Systems (FSU-CAPS) to design, fabricate, and test a robust, reliable, and low-cost Quench Detection and Quench Protection (QDQP) system. Our proprietary Intelligent QDQP (or I-QDQP) system uses a proprietary technique to cancel the HTS coil’s inductance leaving only the desired HTS coils resistive signal. e2P’s I-QDQP system is immune to acoustic interference/vibration and wave oscillation, making it extremely robust and reliable for the Navy’s HTS MS mission platform. During the Phase I effort, test results on e2P’s I-QDQP system showed inductive Noise Rejection Ratio’s (NRR) greater than 10,000 and surprisingly was so sensitive that during AC evaluations at FSU-CAPS, the I-QDQP system could also measure the HTS coils’ AC loss at applied transport currents of Irms far less than the DC Ic value, thus adding an entirely new/unexpected feature to our system. The proposed I-QDQP system can be used on both previously wound HTS coils as retro-fit enhancements and new coil construction making this an extremely versatile system. The proposed Phase II effort will focus primarily on new coil construction using our technology, which is best suited for the far more difficult AC modality HTS MS operation.
