The overall objective of the proposed effort is to more fully develop a solid rocket motor case based on aluminum metal matrix composites (Al MMC) that will maintain or increase the performance of Navy rocket motors and improve compliance with insensitive munitions (IM) requirements. Touchstone Research Laboratory will use a modified filament winding process for producing Al MMC cases for technology development and prototype demonstration. This material and process technology has the potential to improve the performance and safety of tactical missiles. Trade studies have consistently shown an increase in “delta v” over systems that deploy steel or state-of-the-art composite cases. Preliminary insensitive munitions (IM) testing has shown improvements in the areas of fragment and bullet impact. This effort will focus on upgrades to the fiber delivery system and a re-configuration of the winding apparatus to produce more meaningful analog test articles and to ultimately produce full-scale test assets.
