American mathematician
Stephen Smale is a mathematician and computer scientist who was born on July 15, 1930, in Flint, Michigan. He holds American citizenship and was educated at the University of Michigan.
Smale is best known for receiving the Fields Medal in 1966. His doctoral advisor was Raoul Bott. Over the years, Smale has supervised the doctoral studies of several students, including Jacob Palis, James Dowling, Yuan Yao, Siavash Shahshahani, John Guckenheimer, John A. Franks, Morris Hirsch, William P. Byers, Michael Shub, César Camacho, Robert L. Devaney, and Michael Hirsch.
