Spectacles by Snapchat

Spectacles are smart-glasses developed and manufactured by Snap Inc., first released on November 10, 2016. The glasses sync with a user's smartphone and are capable of recording short video segments that upload to Snapchat.

Originally, Spectacles could only be obtained through Snapbot, a pop-up vending machine placed near Snap's Venice headquarters, but they became available for purchase online in February 2017. The original Spectacles cost $129 and came in coral, teal, and black finishes.

Several generations of Spectacles have been release since, including the second-generation on April 26, 2018 and the Spectacles 3 in November 2019. The second generation glasses included software updates, water resistance, and increased storage. Spectacle 3's introduced a new minimalistic design, hosted two camera to replace the previous stereoscopic camera, and cost $380.

There have been reports stating Snap has plans to release a fourth generation of Spectacles, including augmented reality technology that will be integrated with Snapchat's Lens studio. The studio includes user- and brand-created filters that include 2D designs, 3D objects that utilize augmented reality, and face filters that utilize face detection technology. Snapchat filed a patent in May 2017 which includes a hypothetical future Spectacles version including augmented reality technology.

Spectacles capture video in a circular format, in order to better resemble the human eye's field of view. The glasses work exclusively with Snapchat and are paired via Bluetooth with users' Snapchat accounts by pressing a button on the glasses' frame. Videos taken are stored internally on the glasses and can be individually uploaded to the 'Memories' section of Snapchat.

Spectacle 3 features two HD cameras that have four built-in microphones and can capture 3D photo and video at 60 fps. The two cameras allow the glasses to sense depth, which allows users to later edit content with 3D effects on Snapchat.
