The SBA celebrates National Small Business Week (NSBW) annually. Part of the celebration includes recognizing and awarding people or business teams in a variety of categories. Award nominees are required to fill out the SBA Background Form 3300, a form that asks the nominee's personal information and criminal history.

The Small Business Innovation Research, or SBIR, and the Small Business Technology Transfer, or STTR, programs are powered by the SBA. The programs are competitive and awards-based, and encourage domestic small businesses in the United States to partner with federal Research and Development efforts, which comes with the potential of commercialization. The goal of the programs is to simulate technological innovation efforts between small businesses and the United States federal government with the use of federal funds.
