Rufus Thomas (born Rufus C. Thomas, Jr. on March 26, 1917) was an American musician, actor, singer, and songwriter. He was born in Cayce, Mississippi, and held citizenship in the United States. Throughout his career, Thomas worked in the music industry, specifically in genres such as southern soul, funk, rhythm and blues, soul music, blues, and pop music.
Thomas was a singer-songwriter known for his work as a musician and actor as well. He was educated at Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis, Tennessee, and later attended Tennessee State University. Rufus Thomas was also known by the alias Mr. Swing.
Thomas had two children, Carla Thomas and Marvell Thomas, both of whom followed in his footsteps by joining the music industry. Rufus Thomas passed away on December 15, 2001 in Memphis, Tennessee.
