The next generation Multifunctional Information Distribution System Joint Tactical Radio System (MIDS JTRS) is currently undergoing an upgrade to integrate new Tactical Targeting Network Technology (TTNT) capabilities. The high-power processors required generate more heat than previous shop replaceable units (SRUs). The upgraded MIDS JTRS radio terminal will generate up to approximately 30% higher waste heat but must operate within the existing deployed fleet environment. Roccor has identified a simple yet effective enhancement to SRU thermal design that can easily handle the improvement required. The ROCool heat spreading patch was optimized for both cost and thermal performance in Phase I. The proposed Phase II program will develop and validate detailed designs for the ROCool thermal solution in specific SRU designs. The proposed Phase II base program will mature ROCool to TRL 6 to enable transition to the MIDS JTRS suppliers for eventual flight qualification and fleet deployment. The Phase II Option program will then broaden to system-wide improvements and demonstration of an MIDS JTRS chassis. By working closely with both Data Link Solutions (DLS) and ViaSat, Roccor will advance a modernized MIDS JTRS thermal chassis to TRL 6 through demonstration testing under the most relevant environmental conditions.
