Problem: Smartphones and other mobile devices are becoming AF users’ primary digital tool, overtaking computers and desk phones as their go-to devices. However, these commercial devices are susceptible to being comprised, are carried with users everywhere, and are now restricted from secure spaces due to their ability to listen through microphones and watch through cameras. Blanket mobile device restrictions and bans in secure spaces have already been identified as having negative impact on mission accomplishment, workforce productivity, and morale. Both the Committee on National Security Systems and Pentagon Mobile Device Restriction Memorandum provide guidance for exceptions allowing the use of mobile devices in secure spaces. Both documents reference disabling microphone and camera functionality.
