Marvin Gaye , born Marvin Pentz Gay, Jr. on April 2, 1939 , was an American musician known for his work as a composer , record producer , singer-songwriter , pianist , and songwriter . He was a citizen of the United States and was born in Washington, D.C. . Marvin Gaye was educated at various institutions, including Cardozo Education Campus , Spingarn High School , Randall Junior High School , and William Syphax School .

Gaye's father was Marvin Gay Sr. and his mother was Alberta Gay . He had a daughter, Nona Gaye . Marvin Gaye's musical output spanned various genres such as funk , pop music , rhythm and blues , and soul music . He passed away in Los Angeles on April 1, 1984 .
