Malcom Gladwell is a journalist, author, and speaker. He focuses on topics that include science, history, social/economic issues, and more. Malcom Gladwell is president and co-founder of Pushkin Industries, a New York-based media company producing podcasts and audio-books. He is the host and writer for the Pushkin podcast, Revisionist History. Additionally, Malcom Gladwell is a trustee at the Surgo Foundation and is a board member at the RAND Corporation.

History

Malcom Gladwell was born on September 3, 1963 in London. His family moved to Canada in 1969. Gladwell went to study at the University of Ontario, earning a Bachelors Degree in History in 1984. During his time at the university, Gladwell did an internship with the National Journalism Center in Washington, D.C (1982). He then worked as a writer for The American Spectator for one year. Gladwell was a science writer for The Washington Post beginning in 1987, and in 1993 he became the Post’s New York Bureau Chief, staying in this position until 1996. It was at this time that Gladwell began writing for the New York Times.Malcom Gladwell co-founded Pushkin industries in 2018.

Gladwell has received recognition for his works through awards and honorary degrees:

  • The American Sociological Association’s first Award for Excellence in the Reporting of Social Issues (2007)
  • Honorary degree from University of Waterloo (2007)
  • Honorary degree from the University of Toronto (2011)
Books

Malcom began publishing his books in 2000. His first two books, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference (2000) and Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking (2005), both became bestsellers. His third release, Outliers: The Story of Success (2008), was met with more criticism. In 2009, Gladwell put together a collection of his works with the Times in a book titled What the Dog Saw, and Other Adventures (2009). Four years later, Gladwell published his book David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants (2013), and faced some some criticism for his theories regarding the benefits of adversity. Though they both had received criticism, Outliers and David and Goliath made the New York Times Bestsellers list.

Malcom focused on social challenges, disconnect, and assumptions in his 2019 publication In Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know About the People We Don’t Know (2019). His most recent book, released April 27, 2021, focuses on the bombing of Tokyo during WWII and is titled: The Bomber Mafia: A Dream, a Temptation, and the Longest Night of the Second World War.
