Kentucky Colonel is a highly recognized award bestowed by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. According to historians Kentucky was founded and governed by and under the exclusive authority of colonels from 1775 to 1791, when Colonel Isaac Shelby was selected by fellow colonels to become the first governor of the new state.
