He graduated from the European School in Brussels, studied at the London Hall School and at Ashdown House School (East Sussex). Then he entered Eton College, studied modern history at Balliol College, Oxford University (he also received a Master of Business Administration degree from the French business school INSEAD and additionally studied at the Free University of Brussels).

He started his career as an investment banker at Deutsche Bank, since 1997 he worked at the Financial Times as a correspondent, later became an assistant editor, until 2010 he led the influential daily Lex column in the newspaper.
