Founded in Dublin, Ireland in 2001, Intrade gained as a prominent prediction market during the 2008 and 2012 US election cycles.

Intrade's founder and CEO John Delaney died while attempting to summit Mount Everest in May 2011. In November 2012, the US Commodities Futures Trading Commission sued Intrade for operating an unlicensed futures market that catered to Americans, which prompted Intrade to effectively bar US citizens from trading.

Intrade shuttered completely in March 2013.
