Musician and activist
Fela Kuti (15 October 1938 - 2 August 1997) was a Nigerian musician, bandleader, singer-songwriter, composer, activist, and television personality. Born in Abeokuta, Nigeria, he was the son of Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti and Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. Fela Kuti was educated at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance.
Throughout his career, Kuti experimented with different genres such as Afrobeat, Jazz, Highlife, Afropop, and Soul music. He held citizenship in both Nigeria and the United States.
Fela Kuti had a significant impact on the music industry as a singer, songwriter, producer, and bandleader. He had two children Femi Kuti and Seun Kuti. Fela Kuti died in Lagos, Nigeria on 2 August 1997.
