Caruana became a grandmaster at the age of 14 years, 11 months, and 20 days—the youngest grandmaster in the history of both Italy and the United States at the time. According to the FIDE rating, he held the 2nd position in the world for a very long time, fought against Magnus Carlsen for the title of world champion. The match was lost, but all the games with the main time control ended in a draw. The winner had to be determined in a tie-break.
