The product is a wearable worn on the upper arm. It monitors vital signs and alerts hospital staff if there are signs of deterioration. Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust, which oversees four hospitals in Kent, UK, realised a 22% reduction in home visits after deploying Current.
The company was founded by Christopher McCann and Stewart Whiting. McCann thought up the concept while a medical student, and seeing patients on wards deteriorating. He was then introduced to Whiting, a computer science PhD, and they co-founded snap40, as it was originally called. By December 2018, the company had completed clinical trials with 1,200 patients in NHS hospitals, including with NHS Fife and NHS Lothian.The company has received $8 million in a seed funding round led by ADV, with MMC Ventures, Gareth Williams (founder of Skyscanner), and Gordon Craig (co-founder of Cranewear). Prior to that, in 2017, it had received a £1 million contract from NHS England, enabling the company to fund clinical trials.
