Charter Communications is a broadband connectivity and cable operating telecommunications company best known for its Spectrum brand. The company was cofounded in 1993 by Jerald L. Kent, Howard Wood, and Barry Babcock in St. Louis, Missouri. The company is currently based in Stamford, Connecticut. Through Spectrum, Charter offers cable television, wireless internet, mobile network, voice access, and a variety of other broadband services. Charter is led by President and CEO Christopher Winfrey, who took over the position from Executive Chairman and longtime CEO Tom Rutledge on December 1, 2022.
Charter Communications serves around 32 milliion customers in forty-one states through Spectrum. Services offered by Spectrum include internet access, cellular phone plans, cable television packages, and television channels that provide local news and sports programming. In addition to serving residential customers, Spectrum is available for small to medium businesses through Spectrum Business, as well as large corporations through Spectrum Enterprise. Through its Spectrum products, Charter reported $51.7 billion in annual revenue in 2021.
In 2016, Charter acquired competitor Time Warner Cable for $55 billion and Bright House Networks for $10.4 billion. The purchase made charter the second-largest cable provider in the United States.
