Calysta is a biotechnology company founded by Josh Silverman in 2012 and headquartered in Menlo Park California, making an animal feed. Calysta's animal feed product is called FeedKind and is a protein that is used as animal feed on its own or as an ingredient to be added into other feed products for fish, livestock, and pets. Calysta uses microorganisms, called methanotrophs, capable of converting methane into the protein used in their feed products, and other economically important products like plastics and fuels.
On May 1, 2017 Calysta closed their series D funding round with $40 million in funding from Mitsui & Co. ltd. (lead investor), Temasek, Cargill, Municipal Employee Retirement System of Michigan, Walden Riverwood Ventures, Aqua-Spark, and Pangaea Ventures. Calysta plans on using the funding to expand its production capabilities of its FeedKind protein.
