The idea for Bento Lab came from co-founder Bethan Wolfenden, a microbiology PhD student and her partner Philipp Boeing. Bento Lab was introduced on Kickstarter in March 2016. The citizen science and maker movement inspired Wolfenden and Boeing who ran hands-on biotechnology workshops in school and community centers and were frustrated by the lack of accessible hardware.
