Modern military operations require more advanced energy-dense, high-safety power supplies, while remaining small size, light weight, low-noise, and long service life. In this SBIR project, Bioenno Tech proposes to develop a novel class of Li-ion-based, all solid-state battery (ASSB) that is expected to provide high energy densities, wide operation temperature ranges, safe operation and long service life. It is based on a high-performance solid electrolyte that can provide both high ionic conductivity and good stability against Li metal anodes. Using this class of electrolytes along with matchable cathodes and anodes with high specific capacities, a new multiple-layer cell structure design is exploited to address the issues of insufficient electrolyte/electrode interfacial contact as existing in conventional ASSB cells, result in more desirable performance of battery that can be processed with cost-effective, scalable approach and easily be transferred into commercial production. The Phase I accomplished has successfully demonstrated the feasibility of proposed technology, which covers preliminary battery material design, processing and cell prototyping. In Phase II, further optimization and scaling up will be carried out for cell designs/processing along with the demonstration of resultant battery pack products, leading to a successful development and commercialization of a new-generation Li-ion based ASSB product.
