BioMASON employs bacteria to “grow” a durable cement at ambient temperatures between loose grains of aggregate to produce building materials without emitting greenhouse gases and without depletion of non-renewable resources. The idea for BioMASON came from coral structure, which is cementitious material created by nature in ambient sea temperatures with low energy and material inputs. bioMASON enables savings in energy costs and zero carbon emissions.

bioMASON won an international design award called Next Generation “The Big Fix” by Metropolis magazine for a proposal for masonry that was “grown” rather than “fired”.

bioMASON's technology uses microorganisms to grow biocementTM based construction materials. The Company's products include proprietary manufacturing processes and materials used by licensing partners for incorporation in existing facilities or on-site manufacturing. The strength of biocementTM materials is comparable to traditional masonry, and is used as a green alternative. bioMASON's products are produced in ambient temperatures using locally available materials.

Traditional brick-making involves blasting clay with heat for several days which releases harmful chemicals such as carbon dioxide. The process used by bioMASOn is packing sand into regular molds and inoculating with bacteria, which wrap themselves around the grains of sand. Each grain acts a nucleus and calcium carbonate crystals form around it. The bricks are fed nutrient-rich water for a couple of days to speed up the growth of crystals. The bricks are strong and durable and can be used in construction after four days. The water is reused for the next set.
