Overview

Carbicrete is a Montreal-based cleantech company that develops low-cost building solutions that contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The company has developed a technology that can be implemented or adopted by any standard concrete production plant.

Technology and product

Carbicrete developed a technical process for producing concrete using mineral waste and CO2 as raw materials. The process by which the concrete is produced is called carbonation activation, where cement is removed from concrete manufacturing by replacing it with steel slag, a by-product of steel-making. The resulting concrete mix is poured into molds, like conventional concrete, but is cured using CO2. During the curing process, the CO2 becomes a solid, binding to the steel slag granules, which gives the concrete its strength. The process can be implemented at any concrete plant that uses precast concrete methods.
