WHEEL, a device consisting of a circular plane (disc or rim with spokes) rotating about the central axis. Before the wheel was invented, heavy objects were sometimes moved by placing logs or rounded stones under them. More than 5,000 years ago, they learned to cut tree trunks into roundwood, from which they made the first wheels for wagons. The needle wheel appeared a few hundred years later. It is known that the wheels were used in simple mechanisms such as a water wheel or a potter’s wheel.
