VORONEZH, a city, the administrative center of the Voronezh region of the Russian Federation, a large industrial and cultural center, a railway junction. Situated on both banks of the river. Voronezh, the left tributary of the river. Don. Population - 1,014,713 people. (as of 01/01/2014), area - 597 sq. km. Voronezh was first mentioned in chronicles in 1177, but the relationship between chronicle Voronezh and the modern city has not been proven.
The Voronezh fortress was built under the leadership of the first Voronezh governor Semyon Fedorovich Saburov. In April 1590, the fortress was set on fire by the Cherkasy. The city was almost completely destroyed. By 1594, Voronezh was "cut" (restored) anew.
