The history of Vorkuta begins with the discovery of the Vorkuta coal deposit by geologist Georgy Aleksandrovich Chernov in August 1930. Until that time, the territory of the Bolshezemelskaya tundra in the interfluve between the Vorkuta and Usa rivers was inhabited by tribal groups of Nenets. From the Nenets language, the word "Vorkuta" translates as "bear's place, bear's corner" or "a place teeming with bears".

In 1970, the city of Vorkuta was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor - "for the successes achieved by workers in the implementation of the five-year plan to increase coal production." The polar city reached its peak in terms of the number of inhabitants and the level of socio-economic development in 1988-1989, when about 218 thousand inhabitants lived in the city, including settlements. At that time, the city-forming enterprise of the production association for coal mining (now a joint-stock company) "Vorkutaugol" included 13 mines, a number of service enterprises, a system of state farm trusts, enterprises of socio-cultural purpose and consumer services. The total number of employees of the association reached 33 thousand people.
On February 27, 2006, during the reform of the municipal structure of the Russian Federation, the charter of the municipal formation of the Vorkuta urban district was adopted.
In 2014, the territory of the municipal formation of the Vorkuta urban district was included in the land part of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation.
