In 1878, Van Gogh had visited the Voss house in Amsterdam and met his cousin, Kay Voss Stryker. [3]
In the late summer of 1879, Kay planned to come to the vicarage in Ayton to live with Vincent's family. In order to regain his family's approval, Vincent felt that he must have a wife. [3]
In July, before Kay arrived, Vincent and his brother discussed his decision to have a home. At this time, he read a lot of Victorian texts on love and marriage, and spent three days reading Charlotte. Bronte's Shirley, Jane Eyre, and Harriet Beecher Stowe's My Wife and Me, Us and Our Neighbors. [3] In August, when Kay arrived, Vincent confessed to her, but the cousin angrily refused. After that, the cousin left Ayton with his son and returned to Amsterdam. [11]
In 1884, Vincent's next-door neighbor, 43-year-old Margot Bergman, fell in love with him. He always asked unnecessary questions and annoyed Vincent, so Vincent rejected her. [3]
