The Department of Defense (DoD), specifically the Army, employs a dizzying array of sensors on the modern battlefield. This increased complexity has expanded the need for visual analysis for various tasks undertaken by the warfighter to improve mission success and increase situational awareness. Today, many tasks are largely conducted manually, requiring a forward deployed human operator to review visual content and footage to understand and process desired information. To improve human-machine teaming and lighten the operator’s cognitive burden, the introduction of computer vision for visual data analysis would allow Army warfighters to share knowledge and effectively counter the ever-increasing threat types found in theater. Forward deployed computer vision systems would allow for increased capabilities in tasks around disarming IED’s, secure site exploitation (SSE and CEM) and force protection for forward operating bases (FOB’s) – increasing the effectiveness of deployed personnel to support future Army operations.
