Biography

Studied at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Freiburg (1904-1907); graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of Moscow University (1910). Since 1907, he wrote articles on literary and theatrical topics, published in the magazines "Studio", "Masks" and others (1912-1914). Since 1912, he worked at the Studio of F. F. Komissarzhevsky (since 1914 - the Theater named after V. F. Komissarzhevskaya) as a lecturer, then as a director-teacher.

In 1919 he organized the State Demonstration Theatre, which was closed the following year.

In 1922-1926 he was the artistic director of the Moscow Drama Theatre, the Comedy Theater (formerly the Korsh Theatre). In 1923 he recreated the Theater. V. F. Komissarzhevskaya (the theater broke up in the 1925/26 season). In 1926, he made his only film, The Cross.

In 1926, Vasily Sakhnovsky was invited to the Moscow Art Theater; in 1932 he became the deputy director of the theater for the artistic part, in 1937 - the head of the artistic part. In 1941-43. was repressed. Since 1943 he was a member of the art director's board of the Moscow Art Theater.

He was buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery (plot 2), his son Sakhnovsky Anatoly Vasilyevich (1919-1998) is buried nearby.

Pedagogical activity

In 1926, he studied with young directors and artists at the State Academy of Arts. Since 1933, the dean of the directing department of GITIS and the head of the directing department. Since 1943 - artistic director of the School-Studio. V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Art Theater.
